Must Read (to your Kids) Books

What are some books that you feel are an absolute necessity for your children to have experienced and that you would highly recommend to others? Don't forget to tell us why.

  1. Summer is a great time to encourage your child to read books. Reading will help to improve literacy skills and better prepare your child for the upcoming school year.
    One of the best ways to get your child reading is to allow them to pick books they want to read about topics that interest them.

    Here are some free reading programs to make it even more fun!

    Barnes & Noble
    Read 8 books and record them in the printable journal and get a free book when you turn in the list to a participating Barnes & Noble store. (Ends 9/4/12)

    Scholastic
    Log in the minutes your child reads online. When you child reaches their weekly reading goal they win digital prizes.

    H-E-B Grocery
    H-E-B Grocery stores mail kids a package of cool prizes after they read 10 books. Just fill out the form and mail it in. The package arrives in 3-4 weeks.

    Half Price Books Feed Your Brain
    Read for 600 minutes in June and July to get a $5 gift card to Half Price Books. Complete the form and take it to your local Half Price Books.

    TD Bank Summer Reading
    TD Bank will deposit $10 into a new or existing TD Young Saver bank account when they read 10 books. Just fill out the form and take it to your local TD Bank. If you are creating a new account you will need a picture ID for your child. (Ends 9/29/12)

    Chuck E Cheese Reading Rewards
    Earn 10 free tokens when you child reads for 2 weeks straight. Food purchase is required. Take this form to your local Chuck E Cheese. (Ends 12/31/12)

    Pottery Barn Kids
    Complete a reading list and get a free book. Fill out the form and take it to a local store. (Ends 8/22/12)

    Book Adventure
    Children read books, take comprehension quizzes, and earn points for passing them. The points can be redeemed for prizes.

    National Amusement Theaters Bookworm Wednesdays
    Children get free admission to a select children’s film when they present a book report at a participating Cinema de Lux, Showcase, or Multiplex cinemas box office.

    PBS Kids Summer Reading Challenge
    Beginning 6/18, you will get chances to win prizes, reading tips, free downloads, book suggestions and savings.

    Don’t forget to also check out your local library for their summer reading program!
